2010 Marshall Football Predictions

After going 7-6 in 2009 and capping off the season with a big win over Ohio 21-17 in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, the Marshall Thundering Herd will look to maintain its momentum as they head into a new season. They will be led by one of the college footballs top-recruiting specialists, head coach John “Doc” Holliday. The 52-year-old Holiday will bring with him a plethora of experience having served stints with SEC Giants Florida, N.C. State and West Virginia. He will begin his time at Marshall sorting through the 14 returning starters and an 83-player roster, a daunting task for even the most experienced coaches.

Offense:

The Herd’s offense will be under the direction of new offensive coordinators Bill Legg and Tony Peterson and will be centered around the return of seven returning starters, including quarterback Brian Anderson. The 6′-3″ senior started all 13 contests leading the team to his first bowl win in his first full season, throwing for 2,646 yards and 14 touchdowns along the way. Anderson pretty much has a lock on the number one spot this season, but will have to remain sharp, as redshirt freshman A.J. Graham stands ready in the wings.

Returning starters junior Terrell Edwards and sophomore Andre Booker will be called upon to fill the whole in the Marshall backfield left by NFL bound Darius Marshall, who lead the team last year in rushing. Edwards, whose best performance came in a win over SMU last season, rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns including 113 yards and a touchdown in that single win. Booker also emerged as a threat last season but saw limited action, rushing for just 73 yards on 15 attempts in seven games.

If all else fails the Herd can turn to sophomore Martin Ward who came on strong in the last two games of the season and finished with 393 total yards and three touchdowns on just 82 carries, including 136 yards in a game against Southern Methodist on Nov. 21. He rushed 75 yards and two touchdowns in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, enough to be named the games MVP.

Defense:

First-team All C-USA selection linebacker Mario Harvey will be one of seven defensive starters that begin with a trio of hog mollies on the front line. Battling it out in the trenches will be junior tackles Delvin Johnson, and Brandon Bullock, along with defensive end Johnny Jones. They are an impressive group with intimidating size standing 6-4 and 320 pounds on average.

Another returning starter junior DB DeQuan Bembry, who had 53 tackles and three picks, will lead an experienced secondary that includes junior CB Ahmed Shakoor, who led the team with 11 swatted passes, and T.J. Drakeford, who will look for more playing time after appearing in just five games in 2009 due to ongoing injuries.

Rounding out the sixth and seventh returning starters will be junior safety Omar Brown, and senior DB Kevin Perry. Brown, who stepped up after senior John Saunders succumbed to a season-ending injury, finished third on the team with 73 tackles, two interceptions and 10 pass breakups in four games. Perry on the other hand saw action in all 13 games as a reserve behind now departed senior Ashton Hall, dragging down one interception against Tulane on Oct 10.

2010 Outlook and Prediction: Third in Conference USA East Division . It shouldn’t be too hard to better last year’s results as the team returns more than 40 seniors and is strong defensively up front, which should keep the Herd in every game. They have experience and depth at both quarterback and the running back positions, but could struggle with an inexperienced offensive line that has been hit hard with injuries. However, they should end up 5-3 in conference play, behind a new coaching staff that has brought with it the spread attack that is widespread throughout the potent SEC.

Marshall Thundering Herd College Football Tickets And Seating Chart

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The Marshall Thundering Herd football team has a schedule that’s varied but not the kind of variation you want to see in a team you’re rooting for to make it to the top. Still, all in all, the Thundering Herd has made some noise in more than a few venues including their own, on their quest to stampede their way to as many wins as possible. The season opened with Thundering Herd taking on Southern Illinois at home back at the beginning of September and they bolted through to a win 31-28. Virginia Tech was just as determine not to be defeated in the next game and the Thundering Herd went home empty-handed with a loss 52-10. In Memphis, Thundering Herd won 27-16 but the tables turned on them in the next game against East Carolina at home and they loss 21-17. Heading off to New Orleans, Tulane hosted the Thundering Herd and were rewarded with defeat 31-10. West Virginia won on their home turf against the Herd 24-7 but UAB couldn’t get past a few points and lost 27-7. Although they have just four more games before the Conference USA Championship event on December 5, the Thundering Herd can still live up to their name by winning the remaining games against UCF on November 1, Southern Miss on November 14, SMU on November 21 and UTEP on November 28. Fans are supportive and optimistic as are the players and coaches but the truth wears no disguise and for the Thundering Herd there’s truth in the belief that this team has not put forth it’s best game at all times. Darius Marshall, Martin Ward, Andre Booker, Terrell Edwards and Cody Slate are currently the top ranking players on the stats list. Darius is miles ahead with a rushing average of 136. 0 per game. In honor of the philanthropist Joan Edwards, this stadium was named the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Built in 1991 with a seating capacity of 30,000, after two expansions, the capacity has grown to 55,000. Just before the 2005 season, FieldTurf was installed along with a state of the art scoreboard that offers high definition statistical displays and has video capabilities. Today fans can choose from seating options that include 20 luxurious sky suites that offer a plush alternative to outdoor seating for those who choose and don’t mind sparing the expense. Joan C. Edwards Stadium has hosted NCAA Division-IAA National Championship games and Mid-American Conference Championship contests for many consecutive years. This semi-circular shaped stadium offers handicapped seating in sections 104, 105, 107, 108, 118, 122, 123 and 130. The band is situated next to section 130 and just in front of sections 225, 227, 229 and 236 so if you like the rip roaring sound, you’ll want to choose seating near these areas. The visiting team is given seating preference in section 101 and 103 and Marshall students congregate in sections 116, 117, 119, 121 and 221, 223 so expect plenty of school spirit from this area of the stadium. Press box seating and club suites are located just above the area where cameras are situated. For children who join the Big Green Kids Club, there are many different benefits including one end zone ticket to select football games. It doesn’t matter if it will be your first game at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium or if you’ve been to this location many times over. The Thundering Herd are a great team you’ll enjoy watching play on their home turf time and time again. Whether you’re planning to attend a jam packed Saturday game or another time at this stadium, you’ll enjoy the view and the action.

Representing the University of Huntington in West Virginia, the Marshall Thundering Herd is a collective intercollegiate athletic team that competes in Conference USA, NCAA Division I. The Thundering Herd?s home base is the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. They parade in the color combination of kelly green and white, with Marco the Buffalo as their mascot. The Marshall Thundering Herd has won several conference titles, winning the first one way back in 1925. They have won the championships in 1928, 1931, 1937, 1988, 1994, 1996, 2002 and a grand slam win from 1998 to 2000. The 90?s was indeed a rich decade for the Thundering Herd. Not only have they won most of the conference titles, they have an impressive 115-25 win-lose stat in contrast to the 1970 program that they had. Many several factors contributed to the dismaying results of the team stats in that decade. It was in 1970 when a plane crashed and killed the entire Thundering Herd football team and was a complete tragedy for the families, friends, and fans of the victims. Aside from that, the university changed head coaches four times during that period. It proved to be a wrong move on their part since they capped off the decade with a dismal 23-83 finish for the decade. Though the Marshall Thundering Herd suffered from a great loss from the recent bout with East Carolina Pirates, the team didn?t lose hopes in bouncing back from humiliation. It really hurt the confidence of the team especially that the game ended with overtime and a score of 19-16. Other teams should definitely watch out for players Darius Marshall, Mario Harvey and Darius Passmore in the next few games. Marshall is a sophomore that has recorded his second straight 100 yard game, making it his 5th for the whole season during their last game. Harvey is on his career high with an impressive 15 tackles in their game with East Carolina Pirates. Passmore, on the other hand, has also recorded his 4th reception of the season during the same game. So far the games of the team this season is quite exciting. Their losses are just a few margins away, just like their last game with the East Carolina Pirates and a 23-21 loss with University of Alabama and Birmingham Blazers as well. Their wins are even more exciting since the win jumps from one team to another. Though they lost the game to their rivals, the team is definitely not out of the picture. Matter of fact, the Thundering Herd still ranks second currently in the East Division with 3-3 for the conference and 4-6 over all. They also rank 10th in total offense with an average of 325. 6 yards per game and 7th in total defense with 404. 5 yards per game. They also have currently pulled up a remarkable 25. 9 points per game and have become the 4th highest in the conference currently and the 68th in NCAA. The Marshall Thundering Herd is without a doubt, a team that deserves respect and recognition.
